VFW’s "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship" provides service members and veterans with the financial assistance they need to complete their educational goals without incurring excessive student loan debt. It’s just another way for us to say “thank you” to those who fought for our freedoms. Scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to qualified applicants. Applications for the fall semester will be accepted Jan. 1 through April 30. Applications for the spring semester will be accepted Aug. 1 through Nov. 15

Five hundred (500) scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for the academic school year 2025-2026. There will be at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received. Additional recipients are chosen on a prorated basis. Therefore, more applicants may be selected from those commissaries with more significant numbers of applicants.

FRA believes that educating our service members, veterans and their families is important to their futures, as well as the future of our country. In addition to FRA's longstanding advocacy for enhanced DoD and VA education benefits, the FRA Education Foundation was established in 2009, to support the needs of students pursuing higher education. The Foundation sponsors a that helps deserving students reach their educational and professional goals by presenting awards of up to $5,000 to students pursuing trade school, community and four year college, and graduate degrees. The Foundation presents approximately $90,000 each year to recipients based on financial need, academic standing, character and leadership qualities.
Some scholarships have broad criteria for eligibility, while others are more specific. and their eligibility criteria, as well as other scholarships offered by the Auxiliary of the FRA and other affiliated entities.

Eligibility:

A PVA member, spouse, or unmarried child (under 24 years of age) who is dependent (as defined by the IRS) on the member for principal support.

Accepted and enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in an accredited U.S. college or university.
Awards: $2,500 to full-time students and $1,000 to part-time students.

The scholarships offered are need-based and determined by the Student Aid Index (SAI) from the FAFSA. Awards are limited by budget and application volume and are disbursed in two equal payments across fall, spring, or summer terms—covering only unmet financial need. Funds go directly to the student’s school for education-related expenses (excluding personal costs and off-campus housing). Applicants must be under 24, unmarried, and a dependent of a U.S. veteran with at least a 10% VA disability rating. They must be enrolled in an undergraduate or vocational program, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and not be fully funded elsewhere. Students must reapply each year. Applications are open annually from March 1st – April 15th.
– Available to the recipient of a Purple Heart; a direct descendant of a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart or of a Veteran killed in action or who died of wounds; or a spouse or widow(er) of a recipient of the Purple Heart. (Deadline – June 1, 2025)
